Lycos Sues Tivo, Netflix and Blockbuster
Lycos has filed a patent lawsuit against Tivo, Netflix and Blockbuster over a recommendation technology. Davis Freeberg says that the patents that may have been violated are 6775664 and 6308175.
I don’t think I’ve ever used Lycos’ recommendation technology, but I know Tivo and Netflix. I like getting recommendations–it’s kind of cool and I’m always open to cool new TV shows. But my favorite is Amazon’s recommendation technology. It hits you in many different ways (like showing similar items, offering reviews, etc.) and seems to find some great stuff.
But I find that Netflix’s and Tivo’s recommendations miss the mark sometimes.
Tivo’s suggestions are odd. If I were to guess, I probably wouldn’t watch 60% to 75% of the shows that Tivo recommends. Sometimes I get gems. Other times, I get some pretty random stuff. I wish I could fine tune the recommendations, so I can ignore some recent shows I’ve been watching (like “Sabado Gigante”) and focus more on those I want to watch (like “48 Hours”).
